Zeus is the "Father of Men and gods" who rules the Olympians of Mount Olympus, baseding on the old Greek religion. He is the god of sky and thunder in Greek folklore. Zeus is etymologically cognate with and, under Hellenic impact, became particularly carefully related to Roman Jupiter.

Zeus is the child of Cronus and Rhea, and the youngest of his siblings. In most traditions he is married to Hera, although, at the oracle of Dodona, his consort is Dione: baseding on the Iliad, he is the father of Aphrodite by Dione. He is known for his sensual experiences. These resulted in lots of godly and brave young, consisting of Athena, Apollo, Artemis, Hermes, Persephone (by Demeter), Dionysus, Perseus, Heracles, Helen of Troy, Minos, and the Muses (by Mnemosyne); by Hera, he is generally said to have fathered Ares, Hebe and Hephaestus.

As Walter Burkert mentions in his book, Greek Religion, "Even the gods that are not his all-natural youngsters address him as Father, and all the gods rise in his existence." For the Greeks, he was the King of the Gods, which managed the cosmos. As Pausanias observed, "That Zeus is king in paradise is a claiming common to all men". In Hesiod's Theogony Zeus appoints the numerous gods their functions. In the Homeric Hymns he is described as the big shot of the gods.

His symbols are the thunderbolt, oak, bull, and eagle. Along with his Indo-European inheritance, the timeless "cloud-gatherer" likewise derives specific iconographic qualities from the societies of the Ancient Near East, such as the scepter. Zeus is frequently depicted by Greek artists in one of 2 presents: standing, stepping forward, with a thunderbolt leveled in his elevated right-hand man, or seated in majesty.

Cronus sired numerous children by Rhea: Hestia, Demeter, Hera, Hades, and Poseidon, yet swallowed them all when they were born, since he had actually discovered from Gaia and Uranus that he was predestined to be toppled by his boy as he had recently toppled Uranus, his very own father, an oracle that Rhea heard and wanted to prevent.
