An airplane or aeroplane (informally airplane) is a powered, fixed-wing airplane that is propelled forward by drive from a jet engine or propeller. Most planes are flown by an aviator on board the aircraft, however some are developed to be remotely or computer-controlled.

In 1799, Sir George Cayley established forth the principle of the contemporary aircraft. The Wright siblings air travels in 1903 are recognized as "the first sustained and regulated heavier-than-air powered trip". The first jet airplane was the German Heinkel He 178 in 1939.

The Wright brothers trips in 1903 are recognized by the Federation Aeronautique Internationale (FAI), the basic setup as well as record-keeping physical body for aeronautics, as "the very first sustained as well as controlled heavier-than-air powered air travel".
